WestLicht Photographica Auction is going to sale in November 2012 the largest single collection of vintage NASA photographs ever offered at auction – over 4.600 images in all.
“In view of its importance as an archive the collection will be offered as a single lot” says Peter Coeln of Westlicht. “Its unique strengths are in the depth of coverage of pre-launch astronaut activities and in the many photographic high spots among the 2.100 vintage colour transparencies.”
Both of these subject areas are rare on the market. The majority of the vintage black and white prints are original NASA issues, but the collection also includes an important group of rare and early large-format studies by independent photographers including Cornell Capa and Erich Hartmann.
The comprehensive collection covers the entire U.S. Space program from 1961 to 1974 through the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions and beyond. There are also notable sections documenting the development of Werner von Braun’s Saturn rocket, contractor’s spacecraft designs, splashdown and capsule recovery, astronaut portraits, rocket launches, Cape Kennedy and Houston Mission Control and an impressive group of views of the Moon, both from orbit and from the lunar surface.

La Tomatina is a festival that is held in the Valencian town of Bunol, located inland from the Mediterranean Sea, that brings together thousands of people for one big tomato fight – purely for fun! It is held on the last Wednesday of August, during the week of festivities of Bunol. One theory – the most popular of many theories – about the origins of the “fight” dates back to 1945, when (during a parade) young men staged a brawl in the town’s main square, the Plaza del Pueblo. There was a vegetable stand nearby, so they picked up tomatoes and used them as weapons. The police had to intervene to break up the fight and forced those responsible to pay the damages incurred. Bunol’s town hall estimated more than 40,000 people, some from as far away as Japan and Australia, took up arms with 100 tons of tomatoes in the yearly food fight known as the ‚Tomatina,’ now in its 64th year.
Waste Landscape is a monumental art work that takes up the “Halle d’Aubervilliers” 1000square meters in the CENTQUATRE, from the 21st of July to the 10th of september in Paris. “WasteLandscape” is a 500 square meters artificial undulating landscape covered by an armor of 65,000 unsold or collected CDs, which have been sorted and hand-sewn.
It is well known that CDs are condemned to gradually disappear from our daily life, and to later participate in the construction of immense open-air, floating or buried toxic waste reception centers. Made of petroleum, this reflecting slick of CDs forms a still sea of metallic dunes: the art work’s monumental scale reveals the precious aspect of a small daily object. The project joins a global, innovative and committed approach, from its means of production until the end of its “life”.
The first edition of Magnum Magnum was the photography book of the decade, a landmark publication that celebrated the vision, imagination and brilliance of the world’s most renowned photographic agency.
With over 400 images selected by Magnum’s photographers, this is at once a permanent record of many of the iconic images from the last 60 years by a legendary creative collective, and an insight, as seen through the critical eyes and minds of Magnum photographers, into what makes a great photograph.
Magnum Magnum harks back to Magnum’s early days, evoking the spirit of what made it such a unique creative environment, where each of the four founding members picture-edited the others’ photographs. Here, a current Magnum photographer selects and critiques six key works of another of the 69 photographers featured, with a commentary explaining the rationale behind their choice.
Photographer Shawn Clover created a set of composite photographs of San Francisco, California, blending pictures from the 1906 earthquake that hit the city, with present day images. Clover collected archival photos of the earthquake’s aftermath. He then replicated the photos himself, down to the location, camera position and focal length, then the rest of the task involved high Photoshop skills. After looking at the stunning results, it’s hard to imagine today that 106 years ago, much of the city we know now was a broken wasteland of rubble. The 1906 earthquake, and its subsequent fires, destroyed much of San Francisco and killed thousands. The work of Clover reminds us of photo blends created by Sergey Larenkov in his Ghosts of WWII series. Clover’s work is broken into two parts, Part 1 was created in 2010 and Part 2 was completed a couple of weeks ago.

Half of the 200 finalists are chosen by public appreciation, the other half are chosen by a panel of the sharpest eyes in the business to capture the work of those who may not yet have an online following. The final judging panel awards the category winners and Photographer of the Year. The SOLO prize purse is $25,000.
