A Natural Order- exhibition of Lucas Foglia

Michael Hoppen Contemporary is delighted to announce the first UK exhibition of Lucas Foglia’s beautiful and internationally acclaimed series A Natural Order, which is accompanied by the highly commended photo book of the same title.

Lucas Foglia grew up on a farm on Long Island just 30 miles from Manhattan. His parents were part of the post 1960’s “back to the land movement”. Much of the area surrounding the family home became increasingly urbanised, but his parents continued to strive for self-sufficiency.  “While malls and supermarkets developed around us, we heated our house with wood, farmed and canned our food, and bartered the plants we grew for everything from shoes to dental work”.

“Structure and verse” – Structure

The second part of the exhibition incorporates structures, shapes and forms that have been noticed underfoot, overhead or on walls and which I can envisage as being an artistic transformation of reality into a work of art, both abstract and applied.

“Structure and verse” – Verse

I am presenting at the exhibition 42 photographs focusing around two topics. The first combines urban photography with the classics of world literature. In the presented works, I have tried to present the parts of the surrounding world, cities, urban elements and fragments of cherished books that I find fascinating and that have shaped my way of perceiving reality. The collage made up of these two worlds – photography and literature – is very closely interwoven, giving the recipients the chance to personally interpret the works. The quotes include fragments from the tales of Hans Christian Andersen in Catalan and Don Quixote in Spanish.

Underwater Photography Exhibit By Andreas Frank Debuts On Sunken Ship

When the Vandenberg ship sunk, just south of Key West three years ago, it was actually a deliberate move to create an artificial reef. And when Andreas Franke visited the wreck in 2009, he was inspired.

Franke, a photographer, created an art exhibition that would become known as much for its unique beauty as is unique location.

The exhibit, titled: “The Vandenberg: Life Below The Surface,” consists of 12 prints—depictions of everyday life, such as a woman doing laundry, a girl chasing butterflies, and young boys stealing gum—all very “Modern Americana” style, in the vein of Norman Rockwell. But what makes Franke’s art unique is that the subjects are all underwater.
