South Africa in Apartheid and After
David Goldblatt, Ernest Cole, Billy Monk

01 December 2012 – 05 March 2013

This exhibition illuminates a vital, difficult, and contested period in the recent history of South Africa from the perspectives of three photographers: David Goldblatt, Ernest Cole, and Billy Monk. The son of Eastern European immigrants, documentary photographer Goldblatt came of age under apartheid and observed the increasing entrenchment of racial inequality in his country. His early project In Boksburg (1982) portrays a typical suburban white community shaped by what the artist calls „white dreams and white proprieties.” Included at Goldblatt’s request, photographs by Cole and Monk expand the exhibition’s field of view. Cole, a self-taught black South African documentary photographer, observed the other side of the racial divide in the 1960s, making photographs that are eloquently observant and deeply humane. Monk’s work offers a raw and witty record of The Catacombs, a rowdy Cape Town nightclub where he worked as a bouncer in the 1960s. These three groups of pictures are complemented by a selection of Goldblatt’s recent, post-apartheid photographs, sober yet hopeful records of an imperfect, still-evolving democracy.

Nicole Kidman shot by Steven Meisel replicating classic painter John Singer Sargent’s work for „Vogue” US June 1999.

Steven Meisel is fashion’s pre-eminent image-maker—prolific and innovative —visualizing the trends of every fashion season since the 1980s. Along with his ability to cast the faces and characters that come to represent the look of fashion, Meisel has a prodigious talent for scripting story lines that reference and reflect culture. For well over a decade, he has created every cover and lead editorial story for each issue of Italian Vogue. There may be no other photographer-magazine relationship in any other field of such long-lasting commitment and innovation.

Like all truly great image-makers in fashion’s pantheon, Meisel not only depicts fashion, he defines it, and gives it cultural resonance. His influences and inspirations are varied, culled from design, architecture, art, cinema, and literature. Meisel has also portrayed our leading actresses and entertainers, defining the relationships between celebrity and fashion in the process. Most notably, Meisel collaborated with Madonna to create their notorious book Sex (1992).

As the primary photographer for American and Italian  Vogue, Steven Meisel’s continued interpretations lead and influence our understanding of contemporary fashion. Each season, he has also created some of fashion’s most memorable campaigns for Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, Mulberry, Lanvin, and Versace.

George Christakos about himself: I spent 20 years working as a business executive, in the field of marketing. I had a very successful career following deterministic strategies, forms, and formulas that modern marketing dictates, nevertheless I found the field interesting and creative. Yet, I was feeling an ‚out of the box’ golden boy as my ever-lasting passion had always been photography. For more than 30 years a photo camera was a part of my existence. From the old Leica photo cameras and the dark rooms to the digital age and Nikon, the road was long and very creative. The rationalism, the dominating element of my business life, was being replaced during my spare time, by a more emotional and philosophy oriented approach, thus setting free my imagination and giving me absolute freedom of expression. Of course, in the long run, a clash between these two worlds proved inevitable. My kismet was to drastically revise the way of leading my life: “to choose the mistress over the wife”, to finally leave the business world and be occupied with photography on a full-time basis.
